Basic Computer Security Self-study Course

Computer security is everyone's job — there are steps we all can take to protect sensitive information and networks, both at home and at Wayne State University.

Person looking at a computer screen, and the words Computer Security appear on the bottom.

To help reach this goal, staff from Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) created a short self-study course, called Basic Computer Security, in the Blackboard Academic Suite, WSU's online learning system.

This free course is now available to all WSU students, faculty, and staff.

The Basic Computer Security course currently contains three multimedia lessons:

  • Computer Security 101
  • Passwords
  • Phishing (e-mail baits used to "catch" personal info. and passwords)

Each self-paced lesson uses a variety of ways to help you learn about computer security: videos, interactive presentations and games, links to related Websites, and a brief self-assessment of your knowledge.

There is a one-time procedure for self-enrolling in the Basic Computer Security self-study course.

See the C&IT communications sent to students, faculty, and staff, that include instructions about how to self-enroll in this online course.

We hope that you explore each lesson in the Basic Computer Security course, review the material it covers, and give us your feedback using the Discussion Board or Course Survey.

If you have any difficulties accessing the course, please contact the C&IT Help Desk at (313) 577-4778 or helpdesk@wayne.edu.
